Next Parent Education Session is January 12

The next session of the 2011-2012 Parent Education and Support Series, 'I Shouldn't Have to Tell 'Em That' -- Helping TEENS Develop Responsible Behavior and Problem Solving Skills, will be held Thursday evening, Jan. 12. "Can't" vs. "won't" is a critical consideration when teaching children with special needs responsible behavior and effective problem solving skills. Recent research has led to recognizing how deficits in Executive Functioning (common in youths with ADHD and many other disorders) and appropriate interventions can lead to improved behaviors and relationships.

This session, presented by Dr. Robert Arnio of Rapid City, will concentrate on developing these skills in teens. This is a continuation of the presentation on Dec. 8; however, you need not have participated in the Dec. 8 presentation to participate in this session.

Dr. Arnio has earned multiple awards for outstanding service and leadership from the South Dakota and the American Psychological Associations, including the Karl F. Heiser Award for advocacy in 1995. In 1997, he was awarded Outstanding Health Care Professional by the Governor's Advisory Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities.

The sessions are held in Brookings, Pierre, Rapid City, Salem and Sioux Falls from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (MT) and 7 to 8:30 p.m. (CT) on the second Thursday of the month through May via video conferencing through the Dakota Digital Network (DDN). Dr. Arnio will be presenting from the School of Mines location in Rapid City. For those without access to DDN, USD Center for Disabilities is providing access to the Parent Education series through the internet.
